The Italian Foreign Ministry working to gather as much support as possible for the Palermo Conference, while some reports cast doubt on the objectives of the conference.

The Italian government said the Palermo Conference will bring all the main Libyan actors together to develop security and economic conditions, as well as to strengthen the political-constitutional framework as a basis for an orderly political process based on the U.N. Action Plan for Libya.

Conte reiterated the role of “facilitator” that he proposes to assume during the Palermo Conference, emphasizing that the event will benefit from the presence and support of many members of the international community.

Conte said Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Hafter has confirmed his intention to participate in the Palermo Conference.

The Italian government’s official website reported Conte as saying he had a “long and articulate” meeting on Sunday evening with Haftar, where they exchanged views on the Libyan situation.
