Britain supports Libya’s municipal election with $377,000 grant

The British Ambassador to Tripoli, Frank Baker, announced the UK will provide Libya with £300,000 grant (about $377,000) to support municipal election on Thursday.

Baker wrote on Twitter that the UK’s total contribution in Libya reached £1.5 million in two years, adding that strong and democratic local governance is an essential part of Libya’s future.

The Libyan Central Committee for the Municipal Councils Elections announced opening the door for voter registration on Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming elections whose exact date has yet been revealed in the divided nation.

In late November, the UK’s embassy in Tripoli organized a seminar chaired by the special envoy of Gender Equality of Britain and announced a new strategy for Libya’s sexual equality issues.

However, Libya’s Grand Mufti, Sadiq al-Ghariani, slammed the embassy for promotion of gender equality. Ghariani accused the embassy of allegedly “sponsoring activities that violate Libya’s sacred norms and for motivating anti-religion and sedition activities.”
