New police department established to patrol desert, stop illegal immigration

The Desert Patrols Department, a service that will be responsible for combating illegal migration coming from southern Libya, will be established, according to Deputy Minister of Interior for Illegal Immigration Affairs, Mohammed al-Shibani.

Shibani made the announcement during a Wednesday meeting with Spanish ambassador to Libya Francisco de Miguel.

Both officals discussed means of boosting cooperation between the two countries at the level of combating illegal immigration.

Shibani did not elaborate on how the desert patrols will function, and whether they started working.

He stressed during the meeting that Libya is only a transit country for immigrants.

In July, Shibani said the ministry was developing a plan to combat illegal immigration in Libya.

He explained then that the plan attaches great importance to the Libyan cooperation with the EU countries, especially Italy, pointing out that they will go ahead with all the programs previously established, including the agreements concluded with the countries concerned with the immigration file.
