Egypt supports internal political solutions in Libya: FM Shoukry

Cairo reiterates its support for a political solution in Libya without imposing any external pressure on the Libyans, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said Thursday.

“Libyans will be able to achieve stability at the political and security levels, rebuild the institutions of the Libyan state, and crack down on terrorism,” Shoukry said during a meeting with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

He called on Western partners to push forward the political process in Libya, adding that the solution must come from the Libyans themselves without any external pressure.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the eighth session of the Association Council (AC) of the European Union and Egypt that took place in Brussels Dec. 20.

Both sides recognized the importance of their partnership in addressing their political, economic, social, security and cultural interests and in confronting common challenges in the region.

The eighth session was co-chaired by Shoukry and Mogherini in the presence of Johannes Hahn, the commissioner of European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations.

The session re-confirmed the broader engagement of the EU-Egypt relations, based on the joint partnership priorities under the revised European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) as well as the Sustainable Development Strategy: Egypt Vision 2030, which guide their dialogue and cooperation for 2017-2020.
