Suicide attack on Foreign Affairs Ministry kills 3, injures 18


Three people were killed and more than 18 were injured a after suicide attack was carried out Tuesday morning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Tripoli, sources told 218.

Tripoli Protection Forces Spokesperson Abdul Rahman al-Mazoughi was killed during Libya’s Foreign Ministry clashes with the attackers.

Three assailants believed to have perpetrated the attack are suspected to be Islamic State (IS) militants, a security source said.

The three gunmen opened fire on the ministry, then two of them managed to get inside and blew themselves up after the security forces besieged them. The other was killed by ministry guards, a security source told Reuters.

The Ministry of Health said two of its staff are among the injured, while the identity of the others has not revealed thus far.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the attack, saying “the Libyan people are waging a war on terrorism on behalf of the world.”

Minister of Interior Fathi Bashagha o the Government of National Accord said investigations have been launched to reveal more details about the attack, accusing the intelligence of countries of supporting armed groups in Libya, without naming any of such countries.

He added that the Ministry of Interior will form a new general directorate of security services to combat terrorism and achieve security in Libya.
