Sarraj, Mishri lay foundation of Zawya Port

The foundation of Zawya maritime port, located at Libya’s western coast, was laid Tuesday by Head of the Presidency Council Faiez Sarraj and Head of High Council State (HCS) Khalid al-Mishri.

During a Tuesday inspection in Zawya, Sarraj and Mishri visited Zawya hospital and the Medical Research Center to identify the problems facing Zawya’s facilities and means to solve them.

They met Zawya municipality’s officials to discuss the reasons behind suspending projects in Zawya, launch some projects in the western area and tackle the suffering of its citizens.

Amid the chaos Libya has witnessed since 2011 uprising, Zawya has suffered under the war against terrorist groups.

The Armed militias that were expelled recently from Zawya districts, one of districts found on Sabratha’s borders, killed innocent civilians, according to a statement issued by the Sabratha Security Room Nov. 9.

In 2016, the Islamic State group (IS) militants stormed Sabratha, beheaded 11 members of local security forces and killed six others in overnight clashes before retreating.

Islamist militants have taken advantage of the political chaos in Libya to control some regions such as Sirte and Benghazi.

The fighting in Sabratha started when local brigades -formerly among the many rebel groups that joined the uprising that overthrew Muammar Gaddafi in 2011- attacked suspected IS hideouts 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of the city in early February 2016, Sabratha’s municipal council said in a statement then.

Anti-Gaddafi forces took the control of Sabratha in 2011, following a furious three-day battle, with mortars and anti-aircraft guns raised across the main streets.
