UK reiterates support for Libya in fighting terrorism

Britain’s Minister for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, affirmed on Saturday his country’s support for Libya in its fight against terrorism and full readiness to help increase the efficiency of local security personnel.

The statement came during a phone call on Saturday between Burt and Libyan Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Taher Siala, in which both discussed the latest developments of the political scene in Libya.

Burt previously visited Tripoli and met with the officials of the Government of National Accord as they tackled the counter-terrorism issue and economic reform measures. During the visit, the British official also met with some representatives of civil society organizations working in Libya to empower women.

Last week, three people were killed and more than 18 were injured in a suicide attack that targeted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Tripoli.

Political instability in Libya after the ouster of Muammar Qaddafi’s regime has led to the spread of organized crimes including trafficking of weapons and drugs alongside illegal migration and terrorism through the lawless, vast deserts of Libya’s southern borders.
