Prosecution releases some of Caza coffee shop’s workers in Benghazi

The public prosecution in Benghazi on Sunday ordered the release of a number of people after being interrogated on Sunday morning over claims of “spreading debauchery” and “practicing gambling.”

The police has raided a local coffee shop called “Caza” in Benghazi, eastern Libya, last Thursday where a women’s gathering was organized, and arrested the participants in the gathering as well as the workers of the coffee shop. The incident went viral on social media, outraging the people of Benghazi.

The lawyer of detained workers, Barika Beltamr, told 218 that the prosecution released all the workers of the coffee shop, except the owner’s brother and a foreign worker.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) strongly condemned the incident and described it as “a dangerous indicator of the decline of individual liberties in the country.”
