Police arrest 25 illegal Egyptian immigrants eastern Libya

The Libyan police arrested on Tuesday 25 Egyptian nationals in Al-Baydan district, eastern Libya, after they allegedly crossed the border illegally.

Chief of Al-Baydan police station, Mohamed al-Fakhri, said the arrestees were wearing women’s clothes and riding cars pretending to have a wedding ceremony to deceive the security services.

Fakhri added that security arrested the illegal immigrants before passing through one of the security gates of the district, coming from Tobruk on Libya’s eastern Mediterranean coast. The drivers of the cars carrying those immigrants received LYD 6,000 from each immigrant in exchange for sending them to several Libyan cities, according to investigations.

Libya has become a preferred departure point for illegal immigrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe due to insecurity and chaos in the North African country following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
