8M Tramadol tablets seized at Misurata Port

A container carrying eight million Tramadol tablets were seized Tuesday at Misurata Port, 200 kilometers east of Tripoli.

The country of origin of the smuggled drugs has not been disclosed. Similar to narcotics, Tramadol, one of the cheapest addictive pills, belongs to the class of drugs known as opiate agonists, which is used for pain relief.

This is not the first time illegal trafficking has been attempted at Misurata port. Another Turkish weapon shipment was seized on Monday at the same Port, head of the Customs Guard Tarek Abdel Karim told 218 News.

The Customs authorities of the port of the Libyan city of Misurata seized in January 2018 some 11 million narcotic pills on two containers coming from Asia and Europe.

In November 2018, the Interior Ministry warned against the dangers of drugs, urging the Libyan society to stand united against that “ghost that haunts young people.”

In a statement, the ministry called on parents and older people to support the government in its fight against drugs that threatens people’s lives and the future of the country.

The customs authority in Misurata had seized earlier in November more than eight million narcotic pills coming from India before being smuggled into Libya, according to a statement by Misurata Automated Inspection Unit on Facebook.

There were around eight million drug pills in the container along with Indian-made juices used as camouflage.
