EU voices concern over clashes in Tripoli, breaking 4-month truce

The European Union Thursday expressed concern over the resumed fighting in Tripoli, saying it is “breach of the ceasefire brokered by the UN in September 2018 and of the subsequent security arrangements.”

“We call on everyone involved to uphold the September ceasefire and to end hostilities, protect the civilians, and safeguard public and private property,” said Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini, in a statement.

“All those who undermine the political process or threaten the stability of Libya will be held accountable,” stressed the EU spokesperson.

“We support the efforts by the Libyan Ministry of Interior in coordination with the U.N. Mission in Libya to implement the necessary security arrangements and restore security and stability in the capital,” she said.

The Libyan crisis needs a negotiated solution, it cannot be solved through violence, added the statement.

Rival militias clashed in Tripoli on Wednesday and at least 10 people were killed, medics said, splintering a four-month-old, U.N.-brokered ceasefire.

Libya has been suffering insecurity and escalating violence since the fall of former leader Muammar Qaddafi’s regime in 2011.
