WHO denounces attacks on civilians, hospitals amid Tripoli’s clashes

The World Health Organization (WHO) denounced attacks on civilians and health facilities in Tripoli amid clashes that have raged since Wednesday.

The WHO said around six civilians were killed trying to flee southern Tripoli where clashes between rival militias linked to the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) erupted, according to a Saturday statement.

It added that several hospitals were evacuated due to shells and exchange of fire.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that 13 people were killed and 52 others were injured thus far.

On Thursday, the European Union expressed concern over the resumed fighting in Tripoli, saying it is a “breach of the ceasefire brokered by the U.N. in September 2018 and of the subsequent security arrangements.”

“We call on everyone involved to uphold the September ceasefire and to end hostilities, protect the civilians, and safeguard public and private property,” said Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini, in a statement.

“All those who undermine the political process or threaten the stability of Libya will be held accountable,” the EU spokesperson added.
