”Zombie” drug seized at Khoms Port

A shipment of Flakka drug, also known as “Zombie,” was seized on Wednesday at Khoms Port, east of the capital Tripoli, after arriving from Europe, according to a source from the Khoms branch of the Anti-Smuggling and Drug Control Agency.

Preliminary investigation revealed that 2,000 pills seized in the port are Flakka drug, the source said, adding that “made in Germany” was written on the drug’s labels.

Flakka is a type of synthetic drug called bath salts (MDPV).

“Bath salts, in general, are psychoactive synthetic drugs made in large quantities in foreign drug labs. These drugs are all related to a broader group of chemical compounds known as synthetic cathinones, known for its amphetamine-like stimulant effects,” according to MedicineNet.

Its side effects, other than changes in behavior or mood, are elevated heart rate, extreme agitation, jerking muscle movements, hyperstimulation, and hallucinations.

Owing to its low price, people most at risk, poor desperate drug addicts and homeless people use it instead of more expensive drugs like cocaine.
