Serraj stresses principle of decentralization in Libya

Head of UN-backed Presidency Council, Faiez al-Serraj, stressed the principle of decentralization, during the regular meeting of the National Association of Municipal Councils in Tripoli on Saturday.

Al-serraj clarified that Government of National Accord (GNA) adopts this principle to achieve social justice and the equitable distribution of wealth.

The Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE) is preparing for the end of the current term of the municipalities, many of which have been replaced in the east by administrative councils, there are more than 60 municipalities across the country.

Earlier, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) helped the CCMCE to organize a forum and workshop to review the newly regulation issued by the Presidency Council to govern the municipal elections.

Local municipalities are suffering from the lack of budgets and delays to address the basic service and development sector.

On 21 December 2018, the CCMCE estimated that 789,297 citizens had registered to vote in the municipal elections. The statistics show that the number of men registered amounted to 491,148 persons, while the number of women was 298,149, the CCMCE clarified on Facebook.
