UNSMIL head discusses latest developments of National Conference in Cairo

Ghassan Salame, head of United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), met with Libyan politicians and activists during a Saturday visit to Cairo, where he highlighted developments of the National Conference and the elections.

Salame‘s Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs in Libya Stephanie Williams attended the meetings on the two important events set to be held in 2019, and the challenges facing them.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry affirmed during his meeting with the UNSMIL head that Cairo’s political stance towards reaching a solution in Libya is based on dialogue. He added that a political solution is the best option for Tripoli’s current situation.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez said the meeting of Shoukry and Salame in Cairo discussed the latest Libyan escalations and exchanged views on ways to push forward the political process as well as counter-terrorism efforts to restore security and stability in the country.

Hafez said Salame briefed Shoukry on the results of his latest consultations and meetings regarding the Libyan political scene.
