Ambiguity over Al-Mishri’s Washington visit raises questions

The Head of the Libyan Higher Council of State (HCS), Khalid al-Mishri, will deliver on Thursday a speech before the US Congress entitled “The Future of Libya”.

The Information Office of the HCS said earlier that Al-Mishri has received an invitation from the US Congress to attend the National Prayer Breakfast on 7 February, an annual event attended by the President of the United States.

On Tuesday, Al-Mishri participated at a seminar on the situation in Libya hosted by the Atlantic Council in Washington, and held another meeting with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce, in whci he called for the return of US companies to Libya and activating investments.

Al-Misiri, who was appointed based on a UN-sponsored political agreement signed by the Libyan political factions, has announced his resignation from the Muslim Brotherhood last month.

With the ambiguity of Al-Mishri’s meetings and actions, giving no detailed information about them, many questions remain unanswered about the senior official.

In a January televised statement, Al-Mishri said that his resignation was “based on national, intellectual, and political requirements,” stressing the need for the Muslim Brotherhood to implement its revisions that were declared years ago.

On 28 January, he demanded the government to protect southern Libya, as the eastern-based army is launching a military campaign to secure the region.

“Given the reports … about presence of Chadian and Sudanese opposition groups as well as extremist groups, such as Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaida, in the south … the Council asks you to commit to the political agreement and protect the country’s borders,” Al-Mishri said in a letter addressed to the government.
