UN envoy renews warning of “foreign interventions”

UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama, warned of international interference, saying it amounted to armed conflicts between foreign governments and their oppositions on the Libyan territories, referring to the Chadian opposition operations in southern Libya.

Observers always use the term “international interventions” when talking about the Libyan crisis, and surprisingly, it is used at every international conference. However, this international intervention in the Libyan internal issues was allowed by Libyan politicians. The UN envoy pointed to the conflict of Islamic movements taking place in the Arab world, stressing Libya was affected by it. The Libyan people wander how the situation of the country will look like when foreign intervention in their country stop, but they are more afraid of the fate of Libya if the intervention does not stop.

On Monday, Salame arrived in Benghazi to conduct a number of meetings with officials from the eastern region, according to the UNSMIL press office. The UN envoy discussed with Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan National Army, the latest developments in the political process and the security situation in the south. Salame emphasized during the meeting at Haftar’s HQ, al-Rajmah, the importance of narrowing views between the Libyan factions and his efforts to bring about a successful outcome of the UN-backed National Conference, in order to hold elections immediately after the completion of the constitutional entitlements, according to media sources.
