LNA seizes control of Murzuk oasis in southwest Libya

Libyan National Army (LNA) has managed to liberate Murzuk oasis town in southern region from militants and foreign mercenaries after fierce battles, LNA Spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari announced on Wednesday.

In a press conference held in Benghazi, he said the army will now head to Qatrun town located on the Libyan-Chadian border, noting that LNA has coordinated with Chad to tighten security procedures on its border.

“Our forces have secured the city of Murzuk,” said al-Mismari.

LNA has already seized control of Sabha and Murzuk and will continue chasing militants till the borders with Chan and Niger, he added.

Murzuk is located 144 km south of the southern regional capital Sabha.

However, today there have been unconfirmed reports that the Tebu coalition, which the LNA claims include Chadian mercenaries, has mounted a counter attack against the LNA.

Month ago, LNA announced a full-scale military operation to liberate southern Libya from terrorist groups.

LNA spokesperson said in a previous press conference the operation aims to maintain the country’s unity, secure its resources such as oil and fuel, protect Libya’s north-eastern oil crescent from terrorist attacks, deliver humanitarian aid to southern citizens and prevent crimes in the south as well as the illegal migration.
