Libya, Sudan, Chad, Niger sign regulations to secure joint borders

Libya signed Friday the executive regulations of the Joint Operations Centre for securing the borders shared with Sudan, Chad and Niger.

During a ministerial meeting in Niamey, the four African nations agreed to put the protocol signed in N’Djamena on 31 May 2018 into effect.

In 2018, the neighbors signed a security protocol to cooperate in improving cross-border security by targeting transborder criminal activities and smuggling.

The recent meeting coincides with a military operation in Libya’s southern region, ongoing since 15 January.

The Libyan National Army has controlled thus far Ubari, Ghat, Sabha, and Marzouq, then, its forces are planned to march to the far south at the borders, LNA spokesperson Ahmed al-Mismari said Wednesday.

Most terrorist groups in Libya are affiliated to cross-border organizations such as the Chadian Opposition, which exploited the lack security at the southern borders amid Libyan government neglect and formed footholds in Libya.
