UNSMIL condemns ‘fake news’ on National Conference

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) denounced “fake news” on social media and attributing them to the mission.

In a Tuesday statement, the UNSMIL stressed that its official statements are published on its verified official pages on social media websites, or those of mission head Ghassan Salamé and the official spokesperson.

UNSMIL explained that some fake news went viral on social media lately, especially in relation to the Libyan National Conference, scheduled for the end of March.

UNSMIL warned about the circulation of this news, emphasizing that it affects its efforts to end the political conflict.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced Sunday that Italy will organize the Libyan National Conference to bring all Libyan factions together.

Conte said the conference, which will be organized with the UNSMIL, is an important step to reach a political settlement in Libya.

He added that it will be different from the November Palermo Conference in 2018, as it will “put pressure on Libyan factions” to declare their commitment to end Libyan crisis.
