Crime rate drops in Benghazi: security directorate

The crime rate has dropped significantly in Benghazi, according to statistics released by the Criminal Statistics Unit in the Security Directorate of Benghazi.

“The improvement in Benghazi ‘s security came after the activation of several departments and units affiliated with the security directorate, along with launching security plan ‘number four’ by the Minister of Interior,” head of the security information office, affiliated with security directorate, Captain Ahmed al-Mismari, said in a statement on the directorate’s Facebook page.

The crime rate has decreased especially in terms of armed robberies, Mismari said, adding that security services in the city was able to arrest several armed gangs recently.

Mismari added that the staff of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation arrested 25 criminals who were involved in several robberies and thefts.

Last January, Benghazi Security Directorate announced installing surveillance cameras in the squares and main streets of the city to raise its security levels.

The move aimed to ensure the highest level of security and stability in Benghazi. It was announced to achieve a qualitative leap in the security sector amid recent measures to support security modernization and development in the city.

Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city and the birthplace of the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi, has witnessed a three-year war between the National Army, led by Khalifa Haftar, and extremists.

In late December 2018, the Ministries of Interior of the Government of the National Accord (GNA) and the Interim Government agreed to unify their security efforts to secure all regions across Libya.
