Sarraj tells US official he ‘exerted efforts’ to achieve reconciliation

Head of the Government of the National Accord (GNA), Faiez Sarraj, claimed on Tuesday he “exerted efforts” to achieve national reconciliation through unifying military and sovereign institutions.

Sarraj met with Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Thomas Waldhauser, and US ambassador to Libya, Peter W. Bodde, in Tripoli.

The US ambassador renewed his country’s support to the GNA and Sarraj’s approach to reach reconciliation among Libyan factions.

The two sides agreed to support the plan of UN envoy Ghassan Salame to consolidate the democratic process through legislative and presidential elections, for which the national conference will pave the way, stressing that there is “no military solution” to the Libyan crisis.

Meanwhile, Waldhauser praised the efforts of the GNA to achieve security and stability and fight terrorism.

He pointed out the AFRICOM forces are chasing ISIS in coordination with the GNA.

In Libya’s southern borders with Niger, Chad and Algeria, the smuggling of weapons, drugs and illegal migrants through the lawless, vast deserts of southern Libya is rampant.

Africom has conducted air strikes against extremists in southern Libya to counter such illegal activities, but the Libyan National Army has sent forces on the ground to clear the area in recent weeks.
