Int’l diplomacy intensified ahead of Libya’s National Conference

Libya witnessed an active week of diplomatic visits and meetings aiming to resolve the political division in the country.

On Tuesday, US ambassador to Libya Peter Bodde held an unexpected meeting with head of the Presidency Council (PC) Faiez al-Sarraj in Tripoli. The meeting was not announced by neither the PC nor the US Department of State.

The meeting coincided with another high-level visit in Tripoli, as French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian arrived in the capital and sat with Sarraj for bilateral talks.

The French official asserted his country’s support to a political solution in Libya, saying that Paris backs the plan created by head of UN Support Mission in Libya Ghassan Salame.

Earlier, Russia invited head of the High Council of State Khaled al-Mishri to visit Moscow for official talks over the situation in Libya.

All these international moves ahead of the anticipated Libyan National Conference in April showed a global interest to end the Libyan dilemma and get the country on the right track, in hopes that elections would be held with undisputed results.
