Int’l community keen on political solution in Libya: UN former delegate

The announcement of UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Envoy Ghassan Salame of a date to hold the National Conference indicates that the international community is concerned to reach political solution in the oil-rich country, said Libya’s former delegate to the United Nations, Ibrahim al-Dabbashi.

Dabbashi added on Wednesday that 32 Libyan figures and representatives of main institutions , including military institutions, will attend the conference.

Eight years since the eruption of an uprising on 17 February 2011, civil warfare between opposing factions escalated, currently culminating in tension between Faiez Sarraj’s Presidency Council and Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA), leading to a fluid and volatile military and political situation.

However, the resolutions that will be adopted during the conference will be legitimate and will reach a consensus among all Libyan factions, Dabbashi anticipated despite the failure of the Paris and Palermo conferences in 2018.

The National Conference is set be held 14-16 April in Libya, representing a critical opportunity to end the prolonged transitional phase, Salame told UN Security Council Wednesday.
