EU calls for activating border security agreements with Libya

The European Union called for activating its border security cooperation agreements with Libya, head of EU Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM) said during a meeting with Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord Faiez al-Sarraj on Saturday.

Sarraj agreed with the EU official on the necessity of these agreements as they would contribute to raising the efficiency of Libyan border security and develop information exchange between Libya and the EU, according to a statement issued by the GNA’s media office.

“The Prime Minister stressed the importance of activating the agreements on cooperation programs, including training and capacity development of the border security forces and information exchange,” the statement said.

Head of the EUBAM Vincenzo Tagliaferr stressed the importance of such step to ensure the security of both regions.

Earlier this month, Sarraj met with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to discuss security and border management issues in Libya.

Libyan security services struggle to control the country’s borders, particularly the southern border that suffers from smuggling and large illegal migration inflows.
