Tripoli Protection Force spreads across western region to counter LNA

Tripoli Protection Force (TPF) announced Thursday its readiness to counter any attempt by the Libyan National Army (LNA) to enter Tripoli.

Military forces have spread across the western region from Sirte to Ras Ajdir, the TPF statement said.

This comes in response to the LNA’s progress in the western region as the eastern army succeeded Wednesday in entering Gharyan.

On Wednesday, the Commander of the LNA Khalifa Haftar announced that a military campaign to “liberate the homeland from terrorism” will be launched.

“We expect the women of Tripoli to welcome the Libyan army like the women of Benghazi and Derna did,” said LNA spokesperson Ahmed al-Mismari said.

Some analysts said a clash is in any case a major setback for the UN and Western countries that have been trying to mediate between head of the Government of National Accord Faiez al-Sarraj and Haftar, according to Reuters.

Some of Haftar’s supporters have called the UN efforts “a waste of time,” urging him to carry out a military campaign to unify the country.
