Libya hands over Italian arms smuggler to Rome

Notorious Italian arms smuggler Franco Giorg was handed over by the Government of National Accord (GNA) to the Italian authorities on Tuesday.

Giorg, who was flown to Rome aboard a private jet, is wanted in the EU member state for facilitating the violation of the UN arms embargo on the North African country since 2016, Italy’s Minister of Justice Alfonso Bonafede said.

“This is a sign of improved negotiations with Libya and another successful judicial cooperation,” Bonafede tweeted.

The warrant was issued against Giorg in coordination with the British judiciary, the United Nations, and Slovenia.

The UN imposed an arms embargo on Libya in 2011 to prevent then leader Muammar Qaddafi from buying military equipment while he was facing an internal revolution backed by the NATO.
