UN condemns attack on Mitiga Airport

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the Libyan National Army (LNA)’s attack on Tripoli’s only functioning airport, Mitiga, calling upon the rival parties to halt the escalation.

“ The Secretary-General urges the immediate halt of all military operations in order to de-escalate the situation and prevent an all-out conflict,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement released late Monday.

Guterres confirmed military solution will not solve Libya’s crisis and unify the state institutions.

“The Secretary-General further reminds all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law to ensure the safety of all civilians. All Libyans deserve peace, security, prosperity and respect for human rights,” the statement added.

On Monday, an airstrike targeted Tripoli’s airport, Mitiga, after forces loyal to Faiez Sarraj shelled LNA’s Al Watyah base to stand against LNA’s progress in the western region.

Amid the spiral of chaos in Libya, UN Mission Support in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salame, announced Tuesday that he will exert efforts to ensure the convention of the National Forum as soon as possible once the conditions and violence in Libya are settled.

“I will work day and night to put an end to the current military escalation, ensure that reason and national interest once again supersede force and mend the external differences to enable the resolution of the crisis in Libya,” Salame added.
