Sarraj calls on Int’l Criminal Court to investigate against Haftar’s ‘war crimes’

Head of the Presidency Council (PC) Faiez al-Sarraj called Wednesday upon the International Criminal Court to launch investigations on “war crimes and human rights violations” committed by the Libyan National Army (LNA).

In a letter submitted to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Sarraj claimed the eastern army has committed crimes against civilians, destroyed infrastructure, including homes, schools, hospitals and ambulances by shelling banned heavy weapons while trying to control the capital.

He added that since these crimes fall within the jurisdiction of the international crimes, military officials, including General Commander Khalifa Haftar, should appear before the court, stressing that Libyan courts will provide the International Criminal Court with all documents and evidence.

This came a few hours after Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Fatou Bensouda called Tuesday upon warring Libyan factions to fully respect the International Humanitarian Law, urging all parties to avoid crimes within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.

“The law is clear: where commanders knew or should have known that crimes are being committed, and they failed and/or neglected to take all necessary and reasonable measures to prevent or repress their commission, they may be held individually criminally accountable.”
