Controversial Iranian ship seized in Misurata Port, investigations ongoing

An Iranian ship was detained in Misurata Port on Saturday amid fears that it carries an illegal shipment, as it appeared to be owned by a company allegedly affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

SHARHR E.KORD number 9270684, is listed among ships on which international sanctions are imposed, according to Libya’s National Army spokesperson Ahmed al-Mismari statements during a press conference Saturday.

Mismari urged the reveal of the “real shipment” of the container and to inform Libyans about what was seized in Misurata port. The city is controlled by the rival Government of National Accord.

Libya’s Attorney-General Siddiq al-Sour ordered the detention of the ship in the port until investigations are completed, and to ensure that the shipment in the containers matches the bill of lading.

Previously, similar shipments were seized at Misurata port with different kinds of weapons and armored vehicles. These shipments have been used to wage wars inside the country that suffers from continuous fighting since 2011 and has failed to reach a political solution despite the international efforts, especially by the United Nation Mission in Libya headed by Ghassan Salame.

Earlier in January, a Turkish weapon shipment was seized at Misurata port, head of the Customs Guard Tarek Abdel Karim told 218 News. The shipment carried a vehicle with different kinds of weapons inside it, up to 450 9-ml pistols.

Two containers of four million bullets, a large number of 5mm hand guns as well as thousands of pistols and rifles coming from Turkey created a huge media and political storm in December.
