42k forced to flee their homes in Tripoli: UNHCR

More than 42,000 people have been displaced due to the escalating clashes in Libya’s capital, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) declared Tuesday.

“UNHCR staff in Libya say people are afraid to leave their homes. Water is in short supply, power is regularly cut off and there is scarce access to food, fuel and other key basic items,” according to the UNHCR’s statement.

The statement warned the UNHCR found difficulty in delivering humanitarian assistance to shelters where displaced people gather due to heavy shelling and lack of security.

“UNHCR, with our partner Libaid and other local organisations, has also delivered blankets, sleeping mats, solar lamps, kitchen sets, buckets and other key relief items to some 6,200 displaced people sheltering in collective shelters and urban areas in Tripoli, Azzawya, Sabratha, Garabulli and Misurata,” the statement added.

The tension between head of Tripoli-based Government of the National Accord (GNA), Faiez al-Sarraj, and General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar has killed thus far 345 people including 22 civilians, and injured 1,652.
