US Africom denies return to Libya

U.S. Africom denied Wednesday claims about the return of its forces to Libya, saying it temporarily relocated from Libya due to the unrest on the ground.

“This is not accurate. As released on April 7, a contingent of U.S. forces supporting U.S. Africa Command temporarily relocated from Libya in response to security conditions on the ground,” U.S. Africom tweeted.

Prior to the clashes between the eastern and western power rivals in Libya that erupted on April 4, US Africom had launched several missions in Libya to fight terrorism and improve security in the region.

“U.S. Africa Command will continue to monitor conditions on the ground in Libya, and assess the feasibility for renewed U.S. military presence, as appropriate,” the command announced on April 7.

U.S. Marine Corps General Thomas Waldhauser, Commander of U.S. Africa Command, said the conflict in Libya has been twisted and became “unpredictable.”

“Even with an adjustment of the force, we will continue to remain agile in support of existing U.S. strategy,” he explained.
