Death toll of Tripoli fighting rises to 432: WHO

The death toll of the violence in Tripoli increased to 432 people, while the number of wounded hit 2,069, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Monday.

“Since the armed conflict in Tripoli began, 432 people have died, 2,069 people have been wounded, and more than 50,000 have had to flee their homes,” the WHO tweeted.

It comes after Libya’s eastern-based army was ordered to move to the west, specifically Tripoli, resulting in deadly clashes between them and the UN-backed government.

In an online statement issued Monday, the WHO emphasized that “every day of violence means more people killed, injured, or displaced.”

The WHO continues to deploy its medical teams and provide assistance to the wounded in more than one place in the capital, and is conducting major and moderate surgery for the wounded in the clashes.

UN’s deputy envoy to Libya Maria do Valle Ribeiro warned of the deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

The UN needs to ramp up its humanitarian response in Libya as fighting around the capital is unlikely to stop soon, Ribeiro said in April. she called for a lull in fighting but acknowledged aid partners need to be prepared for continuing clashes.
