Libya, UNICEF ink 2-year deal to support youth

UNICEF and Libya’s General Authority of Sports and Youth signed an agreement Thursday to support Libya’s youth programs, according to UNICEF.

“UNICEF and General Authority of Sports and Youth have signed a two-year work plan to support youth programs,” UNICEF said in a statement on Friday.

“During 2019-2020 ambitious adolescents and young girls and boys will receive transformational leadership and innovative thinking trainings to establish social enterprises in 24 municipalities,” the statement added.

“When young people are prepared and empowered, they can use their energy, creativity, and talent to turn an uncertain landscape into a world of opportunity – for themselves and us all,” UNICEF concluded.

Earlier last week, UNICEF and the Libyan Ministry of Education signed an agreement to provide education for children affected by the armed conflict in the country.

“The plan aims to ensure equal access to quality education and provide conflict-affected children with education services and catch-up and remedial classes,” UNICEF said.

The plan also includes training of teachers and education personnel on a range of topics, including the provision of protective education, UNICEF added.

Amid years of armed conflict and political instability, the Libyan authorities have been struggling to meet the needs of the young people, mainly employment opportunities and proper education.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability ever since the fall of late ruler Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.
