Merkel, Trump discuss recent Libyan developments

German Chancellor,M Angela Merkel and U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted Wednesday the recent developments in the Libyan crisis, according to White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

During their meeting in the United Kingdom, they agreed to hold further talks at the G-20 summit, which Japan is expected to host in June.

On April 4, General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced the launch of an offensive against Tripoli, while the government of National Accord (GNA) ordered all allied military units to gear up to defend the capital. The warring factions are currently involved in battles along the outskirts of Tripoli.

Previously, Germany and the U.S. have declared their full support to an immediate ceasefire in Libya and to unifying Libya.

In mid-April, David Pollock, a Bernstein Fellow at the Washington Institute, told 218 News that the international community will approve of the LNA’s controlling all Libyan regions because it would unify state institutions.

Support shown to the U.N.-recognized GNA, based in Tripoli and headed by Faiez al-Sarraj, will not prevent the international community from accepting the unification of Libyan institutions in the case of the LNA’s success in western Libya, much like it succeeded in eastern and southern Libya, according to Pollock.

“We are waiting for the outcome of the military confrontation, but because of the strong resistance of Haftar’s forces in Tripoli, conducting a dialogue to save the capital from destruction is a remote possibility,” he added.
