New security system applied at Ras Jedir border crossing

Tunisia has applied a new security system at the Ras Jedir border crossing, Tunisian Interior Minister Hicham Fourati said Sunday.

Fourati added that the system aims to arrest those who try to infiltrate into Tunisia from Libya without identification documents or with false papers.

He explained that Tunisia has arrested terrorist groups from Libya and Syria in the past period without revealing further details.

Since the beginning of the conflict in western Libya, security at the Tunisian-Libyan borders is on maximum alert after international suspicion that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is in Libya, according to French newspaper JeuneAfrique on June 5.

In mid-May, British military officials announced Baghdadi is believed to be hiding in Libya since February after fleeing Syria’s Baghouz.
