Haftar considers political solution in Libya: Salame

Special Envoy of the U.N. Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ghassan Salame said General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar is considering a political solution in Libya.

Salame added that Haftar, during a Saturday meeting, agreed with him on a number of political aspects that should be implemented to shorten the conflict.

As part of his visit to eastern Libya, Salame met with Hafatr in al-Rujmeh area near Benghazi to discuss the circumstances that led to the outbreak of fighting in the western region.

They shed light on the humanitarian situation in Tripoli and the means to accelerate the transition towards a political solution.

Salame’s meeting with Haftar was the first since the tensions in western Libya erupted on April 4, when Haftar pushed his forces to the western region where the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord is based.

The war in Tripoli has killed more than 560 people, injured 2,800 and forced more than 82,000 to flee their homes.
