Libya’s refugee shelters ‘concentration camps’: Italian MP

Italy’s opposition parliamentarian Matteo Orfini rejected on Tuesday any agreements with Libya on illegal immigration, describing its refugee shelters as “concentration camps.”

Orfini of the Democratic Party said his country should stop supporting such accommodation centers directly, according to the Italian agency Aki.

“We will never vote on the confirmation of immigration agreements with Libya,” he said.

The migration crisis between Libya and Italy has been aggravated within the Democratic Party, after a minority of the party joined the members of three other parties in refusing to supply the Libyan Coast Guard with boats to save migrants.

Orfini said agreements with Libya have not been ratified by the Italian parliament, adding that some members of parliament oppose the agreements.

For his part, Italian parliamentarian Alicia Morani proposed to the Democratic Party the need to find compromises on the file of migrants and the agreements concluded by Italy with Libya.

Moroni said the illegal immigration file is not clear. “We should hear the foreign affairs official in the parliament, Enzo Amendola, to clarify the matter and find a compromise between the two decisions whether to reject or agree to the continuity of the agreement.”

She added in statements to Aki that she will wait for discussion between the lawmakers in the ad hoc session.
