Sarraj pays Italy unannounced visit to request support

Head of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Faiez al-Sarraj paid Monday an unannounced visit to Italy to request support, according to Italian newspaper la Repubblica.

la Repubblica said Sarraj seeks to convince Italy to play a bigger role in politically supporting the GNA amid its war with the Libyan National Army (LNA).

During the visit, Sarraj held a meeting with Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini in Milan, during which they discussed illegal immigration, the consequences of the ongoing war in Libya and the threats of terrorist organisations.

In late May, the Italian authorities called on Sarraj to leave Tripoli as soon as possible as dangers are escalating with the progress of the LNA towards the capital.

Yet, the GNA has been able to address the LNA’s advancement in the past few days after forcing the LNA to withdraw from its main base, Gharyan, Wednesday.

The forces of the GNA also launched on Wednesday eight night airstrikes on the operation room of the LNA in Gharyan.
