Interim Government discusses health sector situation

Prime Minister of the Tobruk-based government Abdullah al-Thinni met on Monday with Minister of Health Saad Akoub to discuss the situation of a number of public hospitals in the eastern region, according to the government’s official Facebook page.

Both officials addressed the mechanisms of disbursing the financial allocations to the public hospitals of Benghazi, al-Bayda, Tobruk, Derna, Ajdabiya, Kufra, and al-Marj.

These hospitals were previously given large funds to purchase their needs of medical equipment and supplies.

Since December 2018, medical supply has suffered a major setback in Libya due to the persistent political crisis, leading to endemic shortages. Achieving universal health coverage requires access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable essential medicines.
