Fezzan Anger Movement threatens to close Sharara oilfield

The Fezzan Anger Movement threatened on Saturday to close el-Sharara and Feel oilfields in the southern region to pressure the government into meeting the area’s basic needs.

The movement demanded the government to provide cash, fuel, and job opportunities for youth, and to establish development projects and resolve the crisis of electricity.

In the recent period, activists have called for the return of the activities of Fezzan Anger Movement due to the bad living conditions in the region and the rolling power cut.

On Thursday night, the streets of Tripoli and southern cities witnessed protests of angry citizens because of the long power cuts that lasted 18 hours. Social media platforms were also full of anger, where Libyan users accused officials at the Government of National Accord (GNA) because of the failure to solve the electricity crisis for years.

It would not be the first time for the Fezzan Anger Movement to close Libya’s biggest oil field with 315,000 barrels per day as groups of tribesmen, armed protesters and state guards self-proclaimed as the Fezzan Anger Movement had controlled the field on Dec. 8. They demanded salary payments and the provisions of basic needs in the south.

The National Oil Corporation, then, declared a force majeure on operations at the oilfield and shut down its production, saying it would not lift it because it “cannot risk workers’ lives.”

A month after the eastern Libyan forces loyal to the Libyan National Army (LNA) took control of el-Sharara in February, the NOC lifted the force majeure, noting that the losses incurred due to the closure amounted to $1.8 billion.
