We are doing utmost to avoid military escalation in Libya: UNSMIL

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya said that it is doing its outmost with all local and foreign actors to avoid military escalation.

“UNSMIL is doing its outmost with all local and foreign actors to avoid military escalation and to ensure protection of civilians from any targeting in addition to taking due care of those who have been forced to leave their homes.

The mission calls upon all parties to respect the provisions of the International Humanitarian Law which prohibits targeting civilians & health facilities, and reminds them of the consequences of any violation.” UNSMIL posted on its twitter account Saturday.

Fierce clashes between the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the Government of the National Accord (GNA) has brought out from Friday night to early morning of Saturday in areas near Tripoli, including Yarmouk, Al Khala and road leading to Tripoli Airport.

The two rival sides have fought for Yarmouk area, which the GNA and LNA ‘have switched hands’ several times since the beginning of the LNA military operation in western region in early April. However, no further details on the consequences of the fighting have been revealed.
