EU expresses ‘deep sorrow’ over illegal immigrants death

EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini expressed her deep sorrow over the incident of the sinking of more than 100 illegal migrants on the coast of Libya.

In a Friday statement, Mogherini stressed that the EU will continue its work to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. The statement added that the EU mission was in contact with the Libyan authorities as soon as it heard about the incident.

The EU foreign policy representative emphasized that providing safe alternatives to sea crossings to the EU is necessary to prevent further tragedies of migrants.

Mogherini stressed the need to put an end to Libya’s current system of illegal immigration.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, also expressed his sorrow over the death of nearly 100 illegal immigrate at the Libyan shores.

In a Friday statement,  Haq said that Libya is not a safe country for immigrants. He added that Illegal immigrants must be treated with respect in accordance with international law.

Earlier on Friday, it was announced that a boat carrying nearly 250 illegal immigrants crashed near Al-Khums city, killing up to155 people.

Other 134 illegal immigrants were announced rescued through an operation done by the Libyan Coast Guard.

The coast guard and port security authorities said that the fishermen were informed of the boat crash and coordinated with the specialized teams in an attempt to rescue the immigrants.
