Sarraj, Italian amb. Libyan latest Tripoli battle developments

Head of the Presidency Council Faiez al-Sarraj discussed Tuesday with Italian ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Maria Buccino Grimaldi the latest military and security developments in Libya.

The meeting, held in Tripoli, discussed joint cooperation between the two countries.

Grimaldi renewed Italy’s support for the Governmental of National Accord (GNA) and its rejection of the armed clashes in Tripoli.

On Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Italy seeks to put pressure on key regional parties to stop supporting the warring factions and resume the political process in Libya.

He explained that his country seeks to support the efforts of U.N. Envoy Ghassan Salame, stressing that the crisis cannot be ended by a military solution.

This came three weeks after Sarraj, head of the GNA, paid an unannounced visit to Italy to request support and convince Italy to play a bigger role in politically supporting the GNA amid its war with the Libyan National Army (LNA).
