EU calls for ceasefire in Tripoli during Eid al-Adha

EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini called for a ceasefire between the conflicting parties in Tripoli through a truce starts by Eid al-Adha Islamic holiday.

She added that this truce led by the United Nations, aims at returning to political negotiations.

In a statement Thrusday, Mogherini welcomed the UN Envoy Ghassan Salama’s proposal for Eid al-Adha truce as an important step, pointing out that these measures could be a first step towards peace.

 She urged all parties to work to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access and non-targeting of medical personnel.

The European Union has stressed earlier that there is no military solution to the crisis in Libya, calling for a return to political dialogue in order to move to parliamentary and presidential elections.
