UNHCR calls for evacuating immigrants stranded in Libya to third countries

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called for international cooperation in efforts aiming to distribute the refugees stranded in Libya to other countries.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has welcomed the agreement between the African Union and Rwanda to establish a settlement place for vulnerable refugees to be evacuated from Libya.

“UNHCR is in dire need for other countries to assist in getting people out of harm’s way and provide them with sustainable solutions.” Grandi said in a statement.

The spokesman for the Mediterranean office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Flavio Di Giacomo blamed Libyan authorities for the violations in detention centres, saying the conditions in there are unacceptable and calling for shutting them down as well as evacuating all stranded immigrants.
