Al-Sarraj: GNA tried to reach common ground with Haftar

The Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj has delivered a speech at the Concordia International Seminar in New York, saying the international community had left Libya alone after helping it achieve revolution and that led to serious consequences after interventios started.

Al-Sarraj said the commitment to the Skhirat agreement that formed the Government of National in 2015 could provide stability on the political level in Libya but breaking away from it dragged Libya into a never-ending conflict.

He hailed the Paris and Palermo conferences on Libya and said the Presidential Council is committed to their principles, adding that they failed because other participants failed to commit to the results.

He also said that UNSMIL’s soft tackling of the crisis with the hindering parties made them make more violations of UN resolutions.

“Boosting economy needs security so we are keen on reforming economic conditions along with the security status. The security arrangements have started. We have managed to make armed groups’ fighters join state military and civilian institutions and we have managed to improve security conditions and now we have 40 diplomatic missions operating in Tripoli.” Al-Sarraj added.

He also mentioned the military operations launched in Tripoli at a time the UN was preparing for a national conference in Ghadames, saying he tried to reach am understanding with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and the proof for that is that he held six meetings with him, the last of which was in Abu Dhabi, adding that Haftar abandoned that meeting’s outcome and launched an operation in Tripoli and that he was encouraged to do so by foreign support.
