German oil firm “Wintershall” to leave Libya, citing security reasons

German oil firm Wintershall is mulling, in consultation with the German government, shutting down its office in Libya due to secure challenges, despite notable improvements in its achived projects in the country.

Wintershall said the departure from Libya would not be easy as the company is taking part in operating and managing eight oil fields in the desert and partakes in operating Jaraf offshore oilfield.

The German firm has invested in Libya about one billion dollars and has confirmed paying off all financial dues to Libyan state authorities, including the oil sector financial dues for its activities.

Meanwhile, security and military tensions have made important foreign companies leave Libya for fear for their investments and personnel.
