Erdogan and Al-Sarraj: Costly “orphaned alliance” for Libya

Observers have described the alliance between the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as an “orphaned alliance” that will make Al-Sarraj an obedient partner to Turkey and thus end his efforts to present himself as a leader of accord in Libya.

Al-Sarraj described Erdogan as the “friend in need” and this showed that Turkey had entered a new phase of its alliance with Government of the National Accord against the Libyan National Army.

Al-Sarraj didn’t bother to conceal his desire to have Turkish military support for its armed groups as sources reported that Turkey never halted provision of arms to GNA and, hence; drowning it with heavy financial commitments to pay for the weapons and military backup.

Al-Sarraj fell back upon Turkey after Italy turned its back on its government with the LNA offensive in Tripoli and the isolation against him by the international community since April.

It’s no doubt that the “orphaned ally” (Turkey) is positive that Al-Sarraj is in a weak position in Tripoli amid the control of the leaders of armed groups – real rulers of Tripoli – and is probably going to oblige him to make unexpected concessions to remain in the political scene.
