Italy says making progress on Libya’s war

The Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said there is remarkable progress regarding the illegal immigration crisis that is connected to Libya and has impacted Italy very heavily.

This statement came after Italy and France reached a common ground regarding Libya, which was facilitated, according to observers, by Berlin being a new actor on the scene.

Rome announced earlier a that Di Maio had “fruitful” meetings with France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and discussed a ceasefire in Libya as first step before returning to the political process.

After the recent Italian-French rift on Libya, Rome and Paris now team up for pushing for a political solution in the country.

Italy will be focusing on three important issues regarding illegal immigration; halt of migrants’ crossing from Libyan shores, repatriation of illegal immigrants to their countries of origin, and reconsidering Dublin refugee and migration treaty.
